Urban, multi-terrain or all-terrain: picking the right outsole

Barefoot boot outsole and upper

Every barefoot shoe is flat and flexible. What changes across the range is the tread — and the tread decides where the shoe is honest and where it is out of its depth.

Urban

Stripped-back, shallow tread for pavement, gym floors and office carpets. Maximum ground feel, minimum grip on loose ground. If 90% of your walking is a city, this is the right compromise.

Multi-terrain

A middle tread depth for gravel paths, park tracks and wet grass. Enough lug to find grip, thin enough that you still feel the surface.

All Terrain

The outdoor workhorse: enhanced lug design with deeper, wider lugs and a compound tuned for wet rock and packed dirt. Less slip, more grip across varied terrain — at the cost of some ground feel on smooth surfaces.

Off-trail, wet and muddy, winterproof

Deeper, more aggressive patterns for soft ground and mud, and uppers treated to shed water. These are the shoes for the ESC range and the winter Tracker models: Magna Forest ESC, Tracker Forest ESC, Jungle ESC, Tundra ESC, Tracker Winter.

How to choose in one minute

  • City + gym + travel: urban outsole, knit or leather upper.
  • Mixed daily walking, some paths: multi-terrain.
  • Hiking, wet grass, rocky trails: All Terrain, water-resistant upper.
  • Mud, snow, cold: off-trail / winterproof with insulation and warm lining.

The one rule

Do not buy a winter boot for a city commute, and do not take an urban sole onto a mountain. The barefoot part of the shoe is the fit and the flat sole; the tread is the part that has to match the ground you actually stand on.
