How barefoot shoes should fit — and how to size them right

Sensus II Grounding barefoot shoe, side profile

Most people buy shoes one size too small, then blame the shoe. With barefoot footwear the fit rules are different, and they are easy to check at home in about five minutes.

1. Start with length, but do not stop there

Our women's range runs US 4.5 to US 11 (EU 35–43, UK 2.5–8). The product pages state it plainly: this Vivo fits true to size. So start with your normal sneaker size — not your running-shoe size, which is often a half size up.

Measure at the end of the day, when feet are at their largest. Stand on a sheet of paper, mark the longest toe and the back of the heel, and add 5–8 mm of clearance. That gap is not wasted space: it is where your foot goes when it rolls forward.

2. The toe box test

Pull the shoe on and press a thumb across the widest part of the toes. You should feel the upper give, not your toes. If you can feel a toe touching the front or the side wall, size up. A foot-shaped toe box only works if the foot can actually splay into it.

3. The midfoot should not slide

Roomy toes, secure midfoot. Lace up and walk a few steps: the heel should stay seated without pinching, and the arch should not lift. On lace-up models like the Gobi and Tracker ranges, the elastic or toggle lacing lets you tune this without over-tightening the forefoot.

4. Zero drop means your calves will notice

Every pair we sell has a flat, zero-drop sole — no raised heel. If you are coming from cushioned shoes, wear them for an hour the first day, then two, and build up over two to three weeks. Sore calves in week one are normal. Blisters or numb toes are not: that is a fit problem, not a break-in problem.

5. You get 100 days to be wrong

Every order includes our 100-day wear test. Wear them outdoors, on real ground, for as long as you like inside that window. If the fit is not right, send them back.

Quick checklist

  • Same size as your everyday sneakers, half size up only if you are between sizes
  • 5–8 mm of space in front of the longest toe
  • Toes can splay, heel stays put, no pressure across the top of the foot
  • Build wear time gradually — the shoe needs no break-in, your calves do
